D&D Character - Naethan Rivercrest Character Notes

After discussions with the DM, here are some additional character notes in addition to the origin story.

  • Naethan is in his early 30’s, has dark hair and dark eyes, medium built. He is a scribe, and his services are sought after by merchants, scholars, town officials alike. By no means wealthy, he is able to make a reasonably comfortable living. He is almost good looking, however upon closer examination, his eye are tad too close together, his nose a bit too small, his jaws a bit too angular, and just missed the mark.
  • Naethan is a follower of Lathander. However, this was more due to the fact that there is a small Lathander temple in town and many inhabitants of the town are also followers of Lathander. Naethan does believe in higher powers, but isn't very active. He is more interested in the day-to-day mundane happenings, and just wants to live his life. But he does pray to Lathander and the allied deities from time to time, especially in times of need.
  • Naethan has a fairly common life. He enjoys drinks with friends, music of the bards, flirting with the bar maids, perhaps sit under a tree with a good book. He envies the paladins that would visit the local Lathander temple occasionally, imagining the exciting adventures they must have experienced.
  • Naethan has a family, parents and a sister. After the prison incident they thought Naethan was killed along with the numerous other prisoners and guards. Naethan decided to just disappear without speaking to his family because he does not want to expose them to the evil that is within him. He plans on understanding this evil first, then he will make a decision if he is to reconnect with his family.
  • Naethan was never married, I don't have a reason for it yet. But the real reason is it makes writing his back story easier.
  • It didn't make sense that the immensely powerful Lovecraftian gods would have an interest in some random scribe. So while the warlock powers did originate from these deities, the ones pulling the strings are instead the champions these gods. They are still immensely powerful creatures, perhaps some super-powered aboleth with some inter-dimensional capabilities, but are not something so unimaginably powerful like the gods themselves.
  • After the harrowing event, his faith in Lathander is shaken. He had never felt the direct power from Lathander before (he's not a cleric so it's understandable Lathander did not grant him any powers), but he felt the full brunt of the power of the nameless evil.
  • After having this unholy power forced on him by the nameless evil, he plans on seeking out temples of Deneir, as they often have large libraries full of books. And he seeks knowledge of what had happened. While he's not a follower of Deneir, he planned on perhaps switching his faith, at least superficially, to gain access. This is not too far fetched as Deneir is the brother-god of Oghma, who is an ally of Lathander. And Naethan's profession is a scribe, fairly good fit. Not to mention his faith in Lathander is also just superficial at this point as well, so he has no problem masquerading as one of another faith.
  • It's up to the DM to decide what the nameless evil wants with Naethan. It is a champion of a Lovecraftian god, so they may have more direct and mundane missions for Naethan.
